The same fragrance can feel slightly different in a candle, wax melt and reed diffuser. Why? The key difference is how the fragrance composition is released into the room. ✨
You discover a favourite Paolo Argento® fragrance in a candle and then choose the same composition as a reed diffuser or wax melt. The fragrance notes remain familiar, yet the experience may not feel exactly the same.
This is natural. Candles, wax melts and reed diffusers release fragrance in different ways. Heat plays an important role in candles and wax melts, while a reed diffuser works without heating and gradually releases fragrance through its reeds. The speed and continuity of fragrance release are different as well.
When choosing a home fragrance product, it is therefore worth considering not only which fragrance you enjoy, but also how you want to experience it in your interior.
The same fragrance composition, a different method of release
A fragrance composition contains numerous ingredients with different characteristics and levels of volatility. In Paolo Argento® fragrance descriptions, we present them as Top notes, Middle notes and Base notes.
How we perceive these notes depends not only on the fragrance itself. The product base, temperature, evaporation surface, airflow and duration of fragrance release can all influence the experience.
1. Scented candle – fragrance, warmth and light 🕯️
In a scented candle, the fragrance composition is incorporated into the wax. Once the wick is lit, the wax gradually warms and a liquid melt pool forms. Heat then helps release the fragrance into the surrounding space.
A candle also offers something a classic reed diffuser cannot: it combines fragrance with the warm glow of a flame. We therefore experience it not only through scent, but also through light, the appearance of the vessel and the ritual of lighting the candle.
How does a candle fragrance develop?
An unlit candle offers what is often described as its cold scent. Once the candle is lit, the experience changes. As the wax warms and the melt pool expands, the surface from which fragrance can be released also changes.
This is why a candle should not be judged after only a few minutes. The fragrance needs time to develop in the room.
2. Wax melts – a flexible way to discover fragrance 🌿
Wax melts also use heat, but they work differently from a candle. They do not have their own wick. One or more pieces are placed in a wax burner, where the wax is heated and melts across an open surface.
This makes wax melts a convenient way to discover and change fragrances. You do not need to purchase a larger product to explore whether a particular fragrance direction suits your preferences.
Paolo Argento® wax melts are made with soy wax. A standard pack weighs 70 g and usually 1–2 pieces are enough for a wax burner. Once cooled, the wax can be used again until its fragrance becomes noticeably weaker.
Why can wax melts feel intense?
In a wax burner, a portion of wax is heated across an open surface. Fragrance begins to release as the wax melts, so in an appropriately sized room the effect can become noticeable relatively quickly.
You can also adjust intensity to some extent by changing the amount of wax used. If you are discovering a fragrance for the first time, start with one piece rather than using a larger amount immediately.
Wax melts as a way to explore a fragrance before a larger purchase
This is one of their greatest practical advantages. When buying fragrance online without the opportunity to smell it beforehand, a wax melt can be an excellent first step.
The Paolo Argento® collection currently includes 11 wax melt fragrances, allowing you to explore fresh, floral, woody, fruity and oriental directions.
3. Reed diffuser – fragrance in the background throughout the day
A reed diffuser works in a completely different way. It requires no flame or heating. Reeds placed in the liquid absorb the composition and carry it upwards, allowing fragrance to gradually evaporate from their surface.
A diffuser can therefore remain in the room and create a continuous fragrant background without needing to be lit each time.
This makes it particularly convenient for living rooms, hallways, bathrooms, offices and commercial spaces where a regular fragrance presence is desired.
Why can a diffuser smell different from a candle?
The most obvious difference is the absence of heating. In a diffuser, fragrance is gradually released from the reeds and remains present over an extended period.
It may therefore be perceived as a more continuous part of the interior, while candles and wax melts primarily create fragrance when they are actively being used.
Diffuser intensity also depends on the number and saturation of the reeds, room temperature, ventilation and placement. Occasionally turning the saturated reeds can temporarily increase fragrance intensity.
NERO – one fragrance, different ways to experience it
NERO by Paolo Argento® is a useful example – a floral-oriental composition with multiple layers.
Top notes: lemon, bergamot, ylang-ylang
Middle notes: anise, sandalwood, Peru balsam
Base notes: vanilla, vetiver, amber, patchouli
In a NERO candle, the composition develops as the wax warms, accompanied by the glow of the flame. A wax melt provides a convenient way to explore the fragrance using a smaller amount. A diffuser can turn the same fragrance direction into a continuous element of the room.
OUD – a fragrance worth exploring in different forms
OUD by Paolo Argento® is another example – a layered composition combining green, floral, woody and oriental elements.
Top notes: green leaves, geranium, ylang-ylang
Middle notes: rose, cedarwood, jasmine, iris
Base notes: oud, sandalwood, amber, musk, patchouli
Such a complex composition demonstrates why fragrance should be considered as more than just a product name. The way it is released can influence which elements attract our attention at a particular moment.
Candle, wax melt or diffuser – which should you choose?
Instead of asking which product is best, consider how you want to use fragrance.
– choose a scented candle if you want fragrance combined with candlelight and an evening ritual
– choose a wax melt if you enjoy changing fragrances frequently, want a quicker fragrance experience or would like to explore a composition before buying a larger product
– choose a reed diffuser if you want fragrance to remain present in the room without lighting a candle
Can you combine several products?
You do not need to limit yourself to one format. A diffuser can create a gentle fragrance background during the day, while a candle can become part of the evening atmosphere.
Moderation is important. If a strong diffuser is already working in a small room, adding an intense wax melt and candle at the same time may become overwhelming. With home fragrance, more does not always mean better.
Is it worth combining products in the same fragrance?
If you particularly enjoy one composition, using it in different formats can help create a consistent fragrance character throughout your interior. A diffuser can form the background, a candle can become part of your evening ritual and a wax melt can provide a more occasional fragrance experience.
The same fragrance, three different experiences ✨
A candle creates a moment – combining fragrance with light and the ritual of lighting a flame. A wax melt offers flexibility – allowing you to change and discover fragrances easily. A reed diffuser creates a background – gradually releasing fragrance over an extended period.
Even when you choose the same Paolo Argento® fragrance, your experience may therefore change depending on the product format, room and way it is used.
You do not have to choose only a fragrance. You can also choose how you want to experience it.
